How to Turn Off Focused Inbox So All Email Goes to the Inbox
Summary
This guide explains how to disable Focused Inbox so your messages stop being split between Focused and Other. Once it’s turned off, all email will appear together in your Inbox like a standard mailbox view.
Assumptions
You have access to your own mailbox and can change your Outlook settings. These steps apply to most Microsoft 365 users using Outlook on the web, the new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook for Windows, and Outlook mobile.
Quick Guide
Focused Inbox is a viewing feature in Outlook that separates mail into two tabs. Turning it off removes the Focused/Other split and returns your Inbox to a single combined list. You’ll make the change in whichever Outlook app you use.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Outlook on the web (recommended if you’re unsure which Outlook you’re using)
Sign in to Outlook on the web.
In the top-right corner, select the Settings icon (gear).
Select Mail.
Select Layout.
Find Focused Inbox.
Set Focused Inbox to Off.
Refresh your browser tab if the view doesn’t update right away.
New Outlook for Windows
Open the new Outlook app.
Select Settings (gear) in the top-right.
Select Mail.
Select Layout.
Under Focused inbox, switch it Off.
Return to your Inbox and confirm the Focused/Other tabs are gone.
Classic Outlook for Windows
Open Outlook.
Select the View tab.
Find the Show Focused Inbox button.
Click Show Focused Inbox to turn it off (the button will no longer be highlighted).
Return to your Inbox and confirm Focused/Other no longer appears.
Outlook mobile (iPhone/iPad/Android)
Open the Outlook app.
Tap your profile icon (top-left).
Tap the Settings icon (gear).
Select your email account under Mail Accounts.
Find Focused Inbox.
Toggle it Off.
Go back to your Inbox and confirm Focused/Other is removed.
Troubleshooting
If you turn it off but still see Focused and Other, close and reopen Outlook, or refresh the Outlook web page. On shared computers, confirm you’re changing settings under your own profile and not a different mailbox. If you use multiple devices, you may need to disable it in each Outlook app separately because Focused Inbox behavior can be app-specific. If your inbox still looks filtered, check that you don’t have a View filter applied (for example, “Unread” or “Mentions”), which can make it seem like email is missing.
Security / Business Considerations
Focused Inbox does not change where messages are delivered, retained, or archived. It only changes how Outlook sorts and displays mail. In a business environment, turning it off can be helpful for users who handle shared mailboxes, time-sensitive requests, or ticket-style workflows, since it reduces the chance that an important message lands in “Other” and is overlooked.
When to Contact IT Support
Contact IT Support if Focused Inbox keeps reappearing after being disabled, if you don’t see the setting at all, or if this change needs to be standardized across a department. IT can confirm whether mailbox policies, app deployment settings, or managed device profiles are affecting Outlook behavior.
